6 steps to guarantee you achieve every goal you set
A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
A goal is a desired result that you envision, plan, and commit to achieving.
We need to set goals. Without goals, we have no target and if there is no target then how could you ever hit?
But too often, people set goals and have no plan on how to achieve them.
You need a roadmap if you want to actually reach your goal.
Here are some steps to ensuring that you achieve the goals that you set:
BE CLEAR ON WHAT YOUR GOAL IS
Be honest with yourself. What do you really want? Not the easy to achieve or easy to walk away from goal, but the big, scary, life-changing goal. What is it that you really want? Set the big goal, even if it scares you, and then go for it!
WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN
People who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. And in addition to writing them down, envision them! It is not just about the goal but about the life you can live when you achieve the goal. So envision your life exactly how you want it to be. Envision yourself at your ideal weight, wearing your dream outfit, feeling confident, running around with your kids…..SEE how your life will be different when you achieve your goal.
TRACK YOUR ACTIVITY
Too often my clients tell me they are “eating well”. But what does that mean? To lose weight you have to be in a caloric deficit. An extra nibble here, a larger portion there can mean the difference between losing or gaining weight. Keeping a food journal will make you aware of exactly what you are eating. This is not meant to be forever but is an essential tool when you are starting out on your weight loss journey. People tend to think they are eating better than they really are. When you keep a food journal you can see exactly what it is that you are eating. If you aren’t reaching your goals you know you need to tweak your nutrition But if you don’t track your nutrition, how can you even know what you alter?? Write it down, track it and adjust it accordingly.
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS AND WORK BACKWARD
How much weight do you want to lose? It takes 3,500 calories BELOW maintenance to lose one pound. So what is your maintenance level? How many calories will you cut each day? How many extra calories will you burn each day with exercise? These are numbers you need to know in order to create the perfect roadmap to your goals. It is not guesswork. You don’t want to eat too little because that will slow your metabolism and lead to weight gain down the road. But if you eat too many calories, you will gain weight. Knowing your numbers allows you to determine exactly how many calories to eat each day, Then you can figure out how long it will take you to achieve your long-term goal. FOCUS ON THE ACTIVITY, NOT THE OUTCOMES
Unfortunately, we don’t have direct control over the outcomes. We can be seeming to do everything right and still not get the results we want (or at least not as quickly as we want them). But we can control the activity that we do to get the outcomes. If you only focus on the outcomes, it is easy to get discouraged and disappointed if they don’t come fast enough. The only thing you can directly control is the activity, so focus on that! Reward yourself when you set a goal for exercise and nutrition and you achieve it. You will be able to celebrate tons of wins each week simply for doing your work. This increases confidence and motivation. Then over time, when you do the work consistently, you will get the results you desire. Focus on what you can control.
BE CONSISTENT
Too many people give up too soon. The minute it gets hard or they don’t get the results they want, they throw in the towel. But like I just said, you don’t know when you will get results. There might be weeks where you eat right and do your exercise but the scale doesn’t move. Do not let this deter you. You might be retaining water or have simply hit a slight plateau. There are times when the results will take a little longer. That is when I make tweaks to my client’s plan to get the results. But whatever you do, Don’t Give Up! Remain consistent. Do the work every day. Rather than pull back, push forward and commit even more. I guarantee you will get results!
